Central Portugal
Central Portugal, the region between Lisbon and Porto, often does not receive the attention it overwhelmingly deserves. That’s good for you! It means more authentic experiences, delving into history, culture, cuisine and wellness…without the crowds.
Coimbra was the capital of Portugal from 1131 to 1255. Historic buildings abound, including the University of Coimbra, built in 1290 and the oldest educational institution in the Portuguese-speaking world.
Viseu, known as the “garden city,” dates back to the Celtic period. Medieval streets and centuries-old churches are of interest as are the wineries outside of the city center. Celso de Lemos, the producer of some of the world’s finest linens is nearby.
Aveiro is often called the “Venice” of Portugal with canals traversing the city, and moliceiro (gondolas) skimming the water’s surface. Stunning Art Nouveau architecture can be observed and appreciated along the canals’ walkways. A short drive away is Costa Nova beach, home to unique striped houses.
Across the region are fantastic rural boutique hotels, old communities holding significant Jewish history, tiny hillside villages made of slate, and seemingly-prehistoric (but made for shepherds) mountain homes in large boulders. Visiting Central Portugal is a holiday unto itself.
